Proposal

“I am interested in the strange relationship and separation between the human and a world. They are not encountering each other.” Pierre Huyghe

This research will investigate how objects might be considered independent of human interaction. It will ask the following questions; is it possible to increase our awareness of the properties of objects and enhance the objects relationships to each other. Can we start to think of the relationship between a human being and an object to be the same as that between two or more objects?

Objects are not reducible to their ‘useful’ qualities. – Just because we want a light bulb to give us light doesn’t mean that that defines it. It has other qualities which interact it’s environment which for the bjct are of equal importance and for other objects perhaps more important. This practice-based research investigates how the qualities of functioning technological objects live an interact independently from human thought and actions.

I will try and challenge the concept of an anthropocentric world, where human beings are in a central, and privileged position. This site-specific research project could be encountered in an art gallery is not intended for one. By situating the research in the mundane environment which are we not so used to questioning, it maybe be possible to gain a more permanent perceptual change in the viewer as they questions not only their own experience but the experience of the objects with which they co-exist.

“The world is not the world as manifest to humans; to think a reality beyond our thinking is not nonsense, but obligatory.” Graham Harman
Objects exist independently of human perception, and the existence of these objects is not threatened by the existence of others. Moreover, he considers the relationship between a human being and an object to be the same as that between two or more objects. He refutes the concept of an anthropocentric world, where human beings are in a central, and privileged position. His object-orientated philosophy suggests that while an object may have properties which are useful to human beings in certain ways, they may also have other qualities, which are unknown, and even unknowable, to human beings. Proprieties that other objects may be able to interact with on a deeper level.

The temperature from the light bulb is sent to the stepper motor controlling its speed.
The temperature module measures how hot the light bulb is.
As the heat increases so does the speed of the motor.
Electromagnetic field controlling vibration of fridge.

EMF hotspots arise close to items such as electricity meters. Whenever a current flows through a wire, a magnetic field is created around that wire. A stronger current flowing in the circuit will cause a stronger EMF.

Fischli's and Weiss, THE WAY THINGS GO

Without narration or interviews - records a self-destructive performance of 100 feet of mundane items such as balloons, tires, and plastic bottles, animated in a long, seemingly continuous chain of events driven by gravity, collisions, and chemical reactions.

Fischli and Weiss remove these things that surround us from their contexts in our daily lives, and then restructure their relationships to one another, neither to glorify nor to alienate these common objects, but merely to create new references in which they might be considered.

This shows that objects have other qualities / relationships to each other, independent of human interaction. Are there interactions less important than the ones in which we more commonly associated them with?

A piezo is an electronic device that generates a voltage when it's physically deformed by a vibration, sound wave, or mechanical strain. Similarly, when you put a voltage across a piezo, it vibrates and creates a tone. Piezos can be used both to play tones and to detect tones
