I was commissioned to make a virtual platform of Old Kent Road Mosque for artist Julie Marsh, researcher for CREAM (Centre for Research in Art and Media). Made in collaboration with the mosque congregation and Islamic scholars of MANUK (Muslim Association of Nigeria UK) during COVID-19, Virtual Assembly provides access to the mosque and its community via a virtual reality platform.

A 3D model of the outside of the mosque (previously a Victorian pub) was created using photogrammetry. The model was embedded into the website using A-Frame, an open-source web framework for building virtual reality experiences.

Virtual Assembly website (embedded) was created using html, p5.js and A-Frame.

3D models of the inside of the male and female prayer spaces were initially used to create VR environments.

Insta360 Pro 2 camera was used to take a series of 360-degree photos to create a virtual tour.

A congregation member in the disassembled Old Kent Road Mosque. A central 360-degree image was used to make an AR experience. A viewer can view the space as it used to be when it was a mosque. As the viewer moves so does the image in relationship to where they position the screen in space.

A virtual tour was created using the 360-degree images. The viewer can navigate around the entire mosque.

A 3D model is generated of the scanned spaces which is used to navigate around the space.

Interviews of the congregation members where embedded into the virtual tour and well as the films of prayer.

3D modelling software (Blender) was used to tidy up the 3D model of the mosque adding elements such as a brick wall which was incomplete from the initial scan.
